I always knew that I could give birth as normal and natural as my mother, my sister, my grandmothers, my great-grandmothers and the vast majority of women throughout history, unless the unlikely happened and a situation arose meriting a cesarean section. However, knowing that the highest rate of cesarean section in the world is in the DR, I was concerned that I could find an obstetrician proponent of normal delivery and when I got pregnant, I began to worry about the experience of delivery in the clinic: would they allow me to do labor according to my wishes? Would you allow my husband to accompany me during labor and delivery? And when my baby was born, would you respect my wish not to give him formula?

The answer to my concerns was Leiko. My husband did not know about doulas, but I had prior knowledge and hoped to find one that could prepare us for childbirth, accompany us through the process, and most of all advocate for our wishes and rights in the clinic. Leiko surpassed everything my husband and I expected. When I first contacted her, we had a meeting to get to know each other and for her to explain more about her services to me. At the end of the meeting I knew that I had met my doula. Speaking with her, it was evident that she is passionate about doula work and that she does it to the highest standard of quality, using up-to-date and evidence-based information. My pregnancy was complicated from the beginning, I had 5 fibroids and a "very narrow" pelvis, all pointing to a cesarean section. In the 39th week of my pregnancy, my doctor indicates a sonography where he sees that my fibroids are the same size as weeks before and did not obstruct the birth canal, and he encourages me to try a vaginal delivery and I said yes, but with more fear than shame. She was full of doubts and very nervous, because she had not taken prenatal classes and had no idea how to give birth ...

Being able to prepare for the birth of our son Amalur has been the most exciting process of our lives. We always knew that we were going to have it in our house and everything was arranged for it. Every first-time woman asks herself, what is the pregnancy going to be like? What will the delivery be like? What does the process include?… And in most cases we don't even know.
I have heard about doulas several times, but I had no idea who those people are. I started looking and found information, then I was curious if doulas live here in the Dominican Republic. Luckily I met several people, but I liked one: her name is Leiko Hidaka.
My husband and I took prenatal classes with her. We did an educational program for couples and we both discovered a lot of information about childbirth, types of childbirth, our rights, medical information, what birth is like with the presence of the partner and how he can be a support figure, etc. interesting! Much information that unfortunately the vast majority of doctors do not explain ...
In this country, 90% of births in private clinics occur by caesarean section. Doctors find a thousand reasons why you should do it but in reality they are not true (I do not include here the cases when it is the only option and if there are risks). Doctors earn a lot of money with it and at this time the lives, rights and desires of women take a back seat or do not take it into account ...
If it were up to me, I would send all couples (future parents) to take prenatal classes (maybe you would even change your opinion about how you would like your delivery to occur).
What I liked the most about Leiko is their patient attitude towards partner decision-making. In the first lesson she told us: "I am here to pass on all the information I have, to share with you my experience and my knowledge, but the decisions will be made by you."

She gave me all the information, support and strength I needed in those months, taking into account that I had a natural birth in every sense of the word after a cesarean section of less than two years, with 98% of those who knew it in against and saying he couldn't do it.
My instinct as a woman told me yes but I didn't know how to explain it and she helped me with that. Even when I was about to throw in the towel and on the date of the cesarean section she sent me just the right information for that situation, the baby still did not fit in at 39 weeks. When she sent me why, I took the strength to keep waiting. And indeed, I could wait for my moment and my baby's moment.
I felt respected, supported, I feel that I respected my baby and that will always be in the most important place in my heart. I had the humanly humanized birth that I always dreamed of !!!!!
